Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation dedicate this conference to the spirit of Zayed, the lover of date palm and pioneer of Agriculture

The Organizing Committee of the 6th International Date Palm Conference, which will be held in Abu Dhabi from 19 to 21March under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE (may Allah protect him) , has declared the participation of 102 scientific papers and 79 scientific posters for researchers and academics specialized in palm growing and date production representing 40 countries around the world. This declaration was made during the press conference held by the Secretariat  General of the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation yesterday at noon in the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi to announce details of the Sixth International Conference in the presence of Prof. Abdelouahhab Zayed, Secretary General of the Award and Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Conference, Prof. Ghaleb Al Hadrami, Participating Vice President for Scientific Research, United Arab Emirates University, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Conference.


The Chairman of the Organizing Committee acknowledged the attention given to this conference by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the support of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs and the follow up of HH Sheikh NahyanMubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance,Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Award.He highlighted the concerted efforts of various international organizations and local bodies to make the conference successful. These organizations and bodies are represented the United Arab Emirates University, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), the International Center for Salt Agriculture, the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, Al Foaa Company, the International Date Palm Network and UAE Palm Friends Society, which demonstrates the care and attention  that the blessed tree enjoys at all levels.


Prof. Abdelouahhab Zayed added that this conference is only a link in a continuous and extended series of initiatives launched by the Khalifa International Prize for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation in cooperation with the competent authorities at the state to promote the cultivation of date palms and creativity and innovation in this vital sector which represents one of the most important pillars of food security at the national and global levels.

He also stressed the keenness of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE (may Allah protect him), to promoteefforts and initiatives that aim to increase the productivity of dates and to achieve the best and maximum benefit from the date palm industry. The conference is a part of a series of conferences that began in 1998 when the first international conference was held and the second one was held in 2001. The third international conference was held in 2006, the fourth international conference was held in 2010 and the fifth international conference was held in 2014. We have completed the preparations for the sixth conference which will be held next Monday 19 March 2019 at the Emirates Palace Hotel and will continue till next Wednesday.


On his part, Prof. Ghaleb Hadrami, Vice-President of Scientific Research, United Arab Emirates University, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the 6th International Date Palm Conference, referred to the scientific sessions accompanying the conference, which include over three consecutive days, a main session on the first day and five specialized sessions on the second and third date. The main session will begin on Monday March 19, 2018 at 3 pm to 7 pm with a speech to be delivered by HE Mariam Saeed Hareb Al Muhairi, Minister of State responsible for the future food security issue, and then a unique experience shall be presented. This experience relates to Matrouh Governorate in the sustainable development project based onthe date palm ecosystem through the partnership between Matrouh Governorate, Khalifa International Prize and the private sector in western Siwa, Egypt. The experience will be presented by HE Major General Alaa Abu Zeid, Governor of Matruh.

Thereafter, four international organizations will show their efforts in the field of palm growing and date production: the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, the International Center for Local Agriculture and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).


On the second and third day of the Conference, five scientific sessions will be held as follows:

The first scientific session is titled Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology / Tissue Culture, in which 32 scientific papers and 10 posters are presented. The second scientific session titled "Red palm weevil" presents 14 scientific papers and 11 posters. The third scientific session titled "diseases of palm dates", in which 14 scientific posters and 14 posters were presented. The fourth scientific session is titled the "technical practices of palm dates", in which 25 scientific papers and 17 posters were presented. The fifth scientific session is titled "general topics aboutpalm dates, in which 26 scientific papers and 18 posters were presented.

The Chairman of the organizing committed added that while we are in the Year of Zayed, Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation dedicates this conference to the spirit of the nation's late, the lover of the palm and the pioneer of agriculture in the heart of the desert, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God bless his soul).The General Secretariat of the Award proudly adds this conference to the list of its outstanding scientific achievements in the date palm sector, and hopes that the conference researches, deliberations and recommendations will add value to the knowledge and techniques for exploring the future of the cultivation, industry and trading of palm dates in this era which is distinguished by the quick evolution and progress, and the diversity and overlap of science. On the other hand, the 6th International Date Palm Conference will be held this year as part of a huge celebration in parallel with the ceremony honoring the winners of the Khalifa International Award for Dates palm and agricultural innovation in its tenth session, as well as the ceremony of honoring the winners of the award of the distinguished and innovative farm in its first session, 2018.
